Self-propelled three row tunnel sprayer operational in the near future

Mechanisatiebedrijf H. Hol & zoon, the Dutch-based mechanization company, is currently building a tunnel sprayer that can spray three rows at the same time. The sprayer is being built for the fruit farm Vissers Fruit from Ophemert (the Netherlands). Vissers Fruit has received a subsidy for this from the Dutch ministry of agriculture. The Z3RT, as the sprayer is currently called, combines the advantages of a tunnel sprayer with the three row sprayers that are currently being built by a number of manufacturers. The Z3RT is the abbreviation of ‘Zelfrijdende 3-RijenTunnelspuit’ (self-propelled 3-row tunnel sprayer).
Using the Z3RT, it is possible to spray a large area in an extremely short time. “Our objective is to be able to spray the entire 40-hectare farm within one day”, explained Henk Vissers. Apart from the savings in labour costs, a machine with a large capacity also offers a great advantage for cultivation reasons. For instance, when controlling scab it is important to be able to spray all of the orchards in as short a time a possible.
The Z3RT can be used in orchards with a maximum tree height of 4.00 metres and a maximum between-row spacing of 3.75 metres. The outer two tunnels can be moved inwards and outwards to a minimum width of 3.00 metres and a maximum width of 11.00 metres. For optimum manoeuvrability, the Z3RT has four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering. The outlet direction and air speed of the fans can be adjusted dependent on the wind direction and speed. The objective is to allow as little spray liquid as possible to escape outside of the tunnel.
In the course of 2012, Vissers Fruit will trial the Z3RT. The intention is for the machine to be fully deployable in 2013.
